The Department of Sociology & Anthropology is an exciting and progressive department that prides itself on individualized attention to its students and comprises faculty members who are actively engaged with scholarship, teaching and service from local to global levels.

Our department is among the most diverse in the University in terms of faculty interests and expertise. As a joint department, we use the alliance between sociology and anthropology colleagues to build disciplinary bridges that positively impact our students, the faculty, and our programs. We offer many exciting programs for both undergraduate and graduate students and we encourage you to spend some time learning more about who we are and what we can offer YOU!

  • Summer Common Reading Initiative

    Welcome new students!

    The 2009 Summer Common Reading Initiative provides students with opportunities to:

    • Interact and establish relationships with faculty and peers
    • Gain a better understanding of the college classroom environment and faculty expectations
    • Share a common reading experience and participate in discussion

  • Three anthropologists with strong ties to ISU—Mike Wiant, Maria Smith, and Burton Smith—provided the program for the Midwest Museum of Natural History’s annual Anthropology Fair in March. This year’s topic was “Native Americans: Origins and Contact.” Read more here.
  • Dr. Susan Sprecher, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, has co-edited The Encyclopedia of Human Relationships, which will be distributed to college and university libraries across the country this month.  Read more here.
